Happy Anniversary

It's a very special anniversary today...the 10th anniversary of the luckiest day in our lives. Some people might not look at it that way, but we do. Ten years ago today, we were just a few minutes from home and heading down a two lane highway. It was snowing, and a car in the oncoming lane was stopped to make a left turn. A transport truck came over a small rise in the highway, and swerved to miss the stopped car. The truck hit the ditch and jack-knifed, and the trailer came down on top of our van.

John was driving and leaned over the console, which saved his life. The fire chief told us later that he thought he had a fatal accident to deal with. John was rushed to the local hospital, and then taken to Ottawa by ambulance. He was kept in the trauma unit for 3 days. This all happened during the SARS epidemic in Ontario, so I was not allowed into the hospital to see him for the first 24 hours.

It took many, many months for John to recover. But how lucky we are! Because it's ten years later and we are here....together...enjoying life.

We all know life is fragile. Things can happen in the blink of an eye. It's good to be reminded of this from time to time. That's why April 16th is a special day in our lives.

Gives me chills just to look at the pics of the van. Thank goodness you both survived.

I was in a car accident around that same time -- it was Easter weekend. I was with my mom and 3 of her friends on the way to London from Toronto on the 401. There was an accident ahead of us and we slowed down. A transport truck behind us was going too fast and he rear ended us. The car was totalled and the police said that the people in the back seat were very lucky to be alive (me, and my mom's friend). We walked away with no injuries (well, we all went to the hospital and my mom had a cut on her eye crazy glued up). So scary. It really does make you wake up and remember how easily and quickly our lives can change -- or end.... Drive carefully!

And celebrate you should, indeed. Sounds like the angels were watching over you.
