A Splash Of Red - completed

Here is my completed commission..."A Splash Of Red"...which will be hanging in East Chester, Nova Scotia shortly. If you click on this link, you can see the window before the grout was applied.
A Splash Of Red

I personalized this window without telling the customers. It's probably only obvious to me. Do you see anything in the design?

excitement in Broad Cove

We took a little drive down to Broad Cove on Wednesday. There is a small beach there, and a road called Bear Trap Road...more like a very rough lane wide enough for just one car. We came across 3 women walking 2 dogs. Riley decided she'd like to join them, and launched herself out the car window. We were moving at a snail's pace, so she was not hurt. After a moment of panic, I jumped out of the car to try to catch her. The three women were frightened of our little ball of fluff, and no wonder! Not too many dogs throw themselves out of car windows just for fun. After a hurried reassurance that she was quite friendly, I went to capture her (because of course she is not well trained, and definitely will not come when called when there are more exciting things to do!). Thankfully, nature called, so she stopped to listen and I nabbed her. Too much excitement for a relaxing drive. Windows rolled up higher, we continued on our way and the women got back to their walk.

a day out

John has been quite ill for the past 10 days with a cold and terrible cough. Although I am the more non social person of the two of us, it was time for me to get out of the house. I met DIL for a shopping expedition to Mother Hubbard's Cupboard in...where else?...Hubbards. I bought a couple of small things, but really would have liked to purchase a $2000, 8 foot tall cabinet/cupboard. Maybe after I win the lottery. But, not likely, as I don't invest in lotto tickets.

On we went to Chester, for a lovely lunch at the Kiwi Cafe. A bit of dreaming at the local real estate office, then a trip back home via the old highway along the shore. Even in the winter, the ocean is beautiful.

a splash of red

"A Splash Of Red" commission - next stage grouting
There are some times when I feel like I have creativity bursting in my brain, and I feel almost hyper until I sit down and just get things done.

This has been a productive week...30 pages completed for the Paws For Charity Book Project, several pages completed for my Photo Club yearbook, several inspirational postcards created and (almost) ordered (more on that later), the above window was completed and just needs to be grouted, and another commission is three quarters done (cutting and gluing). Phew.

Time for a break. Which for me means a nice walk around the field with the girls.

Paws For Charity 2012

This year is my fourth annual year for curating an art book to raise funds for charity. The first three years, with the help of 60 artists each year, raised money for cancer charity.

Since my own battle with breast cancer last year, I decided to put cancer behind me for a while, so this year my project will raise funds for S.H.A.I.D. SHAID is an animal shelter in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. We adopted our little girl Myrtle from SHAID in December. Like any rescue, they are always in need of funds.

It's a cause that of course is very "local", so I wasn't sure what the reception would be from artists and photographers in other locations. They are pulling through! So far, I've received images of artwork and photographs from Canada, US, New Zealand, Australia, Ireland, and Luxembourg.

But...I still need more. The deadline for sending submissions is February 29th. Fingers crossed that most people send their images before that! If you know an artist or photographer that might be interested in helping out, the details are on the Paws For Charity blog (

If you want to see a sample of the quality of book, here is a link to my 2010 project (Paws For Charity)

time flies

We had a special visitor for a few days. Our son Cody arrived from Toronto on Tuesday...a little later than expected which caused a fair bit of anxiety (he missed the plane!) The days were dreary, but that didn't deter the two of us from a walk at Hirtle's Beach. I had prebooked him a hair cut (he waited until he got home to shave off all the facial hair) and dentist appointment (what are mother's for after all?) and we watched lots of movies and generally just hung out together. On Friday, we headed into the big city to stay with G and DIL for a couple of days. As they say, time does fly when you're having fun.

and the excitement builds

I look out this window every time I leave my office to head downstairs. I often think that the simplicity of the poppy heads with the lines of the blinds would make an interesting photo, so I finally decided to take one. It didn't turn out as I had pictured it in my mind but it was worth a try.

Like millions of other people around the world, we'll be watching the Super Bowl we're just a party of two with some four legged fans :) John watches it for the football...I watch for the commercials (although we don't see all the good ones the Americans get to watch) and for the half time show.

We're also getting ready for a special guest to arrive on Tuesday...someone we only see once or twice (if we're lucky) each year. I am getting so excited, I'm worse than a kid at Christmas time!

Fifty Flowers

A friend, who shall remain nameless, had a milestone birthday yesterday...the big 5-0. I feel free to tease her, because I've been there, done that!

I created this window for her special day. It has fifty flowers, with this phrase engraved into the window:
A colourful flower for each year
Family and friends that you hold dear

The leaves are engraved with family and friends she has had throughout the years (after consultation with a couple of people closest to her). I can add more leaves and names if we've forgotten someone special.
She has a very large garden, so hopefully she'll be able to find a spot for this window.

flowers for you

To brighten up your winter day.

Today is my one year follow up visit with the year cancer free! After that, we'll be celebrating a friend's birthday. Two wonderful milestones to cheer about!

take a leap

The February image from my 2012 Inspirational Calendar. One of my goals for last year was to create enough inspirational sayings to put a calendar together...check! Lots of goals for this year....we'll see how many get accomplished.
